GENERAL POWER OF ATTORNEY

GENERAL POWER OF ATTORNEY -FAQ

What is a general power of attorney?

Imagine you need someone to handle something important for you, like selling your flat. A general power of attorney lets you choose someone you trust to act on your behalf for specific decisions or even more general matters.

When can I use a general power of attorney?

  • Selling your flat: You can give someone power to sign the paperwork for selling your property.
  • Short-term needs: While waiting for a different legal document (like a Enduring Power of Attorney, click here to know more about Enduring Power of Attorney), you can use a general power for urgent matters.

Important things to remember:

  • This power ends if you lose your mental capacity (e.g., dementia).
  • It's best to use it only for short-term needs, as other options like Enduring Powers of Attorney provide longer-term protection.

What if I'm appointed as someone's attorney?

  •  Remember, this isn't your document; it's the person who gave you the power (called the "donor").
  • You can only act within the limits the donor set. You can't make decisions they wouldn't want.
